The 3 Thieves of Powerful Leadership And What To Do About Them

The 3 Thieves of Powerful Leadership And What To Do About Them

Leadership is one of the greatest gifts you can give to the world. Leadership is hard. It’s rewarding. It’s a journey you travel and never complete. It’s exhilarating. And it’s often lonely.

I’ve been involved in leadership positions, coached, and/or led leaders for over 20 years of my life. During that time, I’ve found one of the most important facets of showing up as a powerful leader is simply keeping my head and my heart in check. It’s protecting myself from myself!

I’ve found there are three thieves of powerful leadership:

1) Pride

  • Thinking of ourselves more highly than we should

2) Selfishness

  • Thinking others exist to serve us rather than we exist to serve them

3) Lack of Perspective

  • Forgetting we’re in process
  • Forgetting others are in process
  • Forgetting to celebrate the wins along the way and see how far we’ve come
  • Only seeing the problems rather than what’s good
  • Focusing on where you ARE rather than where you’re GOING

One of the best ways to prevent these thieves from stealing how you show up as a leader is to re-align yourself with truths about leadership on a frequent basis.

Here are TWENTY of my favorite quotes, statements or truths about leadership that have helped re-align me and helped to keep these thieves at bay. These are in no particular order.

  1. Listen. Learn. THEN Lead. Great leaders keep these three in that order.

  1. Your Team will be a direct reflection of you, good or bad. LEAD them, don’treflect” them.

  1. Leadership is communicating people’s worth and potential so clearly that they are inspired to see it & believe it

  1. Don’t do what’s convenient, do what’s RIGHT.

  1. No executive/leader has ever suffered because his/her subordinates were strong & effective. People only become strong and effective when they are given opportunity to make decisions, initiate actions, solve problems, meet challenges, and learn from mistakes.

  1. Leadership is all about development of people, not the management of them. Develop how they think and who they are, not just what they do.

  1. “You know your commitments by your RESULTS, not by what you SAY your commitments are. We are all committed. We are all producing results. Conscious leaders own their commitments by owning their results.” (15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership)

  1. At any particular time, as a leader we are either operating out of fear or love.

  1. Four most important words a leader can say: “I screwed that Up.”

  1. Be the guide, not the hero.

  1. Great leaders want more FOR their people than FROM them.

  1. Great leaders aren’t great themselves; they merely bring out the greatness in others. However, in order to bring out the best in others you have to first visualize the best in them.

  1. Our passion > Their Excuses +++  Their Success > Our Resume

  1. If you ever feel like everything is going great or that everything is going poorly, then you’re not doing your job as a leader.

  1. As a leader, you are ALWAYS filling your people with SOMETHING. The question is, “what are you filling them WITH?

  1. Humility is not an “aspect” of leadership, it’s the FOUNDATION.

  1. If you’re not getting pushback from your team on any kind of consistent basis it means you’re being too controlling.

  1. Leaders who don’t listen will eventually find themselves surrounded by people who have nothing to say.

  1. “There are no bad teams, only bad leaders. It’s a difficult and humbling concept to accept but an essential mindset to high performance as a team” – Extreme Ownership

  1. “When it comes to performance standards, it’s not what you PREACH, it’s what you TOLERATE” – Leif Babin, Ex-Navy Seal
